A brilliant performance and the result that we had been searching for!
With us still without a win this season we were all determined to get a win. Monica White who had scored so many of our goals this season just made it in time from Bolton but she also brought along a number of Brooklands strong juniors which meant that it wasn’t going to be an easy game.
With Charlotte Clulow back in the centre we were confident that we could get off to the start that we needed. Monica White didn’t let us down and she picked the ball out the air before passing it off to Lyndsey Sung who only had her eyes on one thing, the goal. She wasn’t going to let Monica to get the top goal scorer without a fight!
After beating us last year Brooklands were obviously keen do to the same again and came out fighting straight away. They won the ball straight from the centre and Melissa’s sister used her pace to cruise back our defence and goal Brookland’s first goal.
Again Monica stepped up and got us ahead before Emma Raven scored her first goal after coming back. This definitely lifted our spirits and got the team cheering. But it wasn’t long before Lyndsey Sung picked up her fourth yellow card of the season and the defence had to work even harder to keep Brooklands from scoring. With us still trying to put pressure on the person with the ball we forced an error and broke quickly. The defenders were screaming at the attackers to hold the ball and waste time. The opportunity was just too good to let go and they went for goal. This gave Brooklands the chance to score a goal while we were a man down. Before the half time they scored another two and it ended 4-4.
At half time we discussed that the defence had been doing well and had not allowed them the space to roll the crease. We also identified that we needed to pull out and give ourselves space in attack and not rush the pass. There was also the suggestion that we could lose the draw to which Charlotte Clulow responded by saying that she didn’t know how!
There were many moments of individual brilliance in the second half. A great drive from Katie Bishop earned her a well-deserved goal, an number of amazing goals from Monica White especially the one that flew at high speed from outside the fan, the two goals from Melissa Hewitt against her past team and Charlotte Clulow holding the ball tactically outside the fan just waiting for Brooklands to be pulled up for 3 seconds.
The second half was a lot more one sided and we won the game convincingly with the final score being 13-7.
Special mentions go to the following players:
- Emma King – a strong performance in defence and a fantastic debut.
- Katie Bishop – it was great to have you back in the team and helping the midfield link up with the attack and scoring the first goal of the second half.
- Melissa Hewitt – your determination paid off and you scored two excellent goals.
- Charlotte Clulow – it’s good to know that you don’t know how to lose the draw!
Player of the match was a close call this week with one vote between first and second place. Charlotte Clulow was in second and the winner of the Liverpool Lacrosse bear for the second time this season was Monica White. It has got to come down to the wonderful goal from outside the fan.
