A newly secured grant will help to make the 19th Century-built Liverpool Cricket Club clubhouse more accessible, as it continues to host a range of community events.

The £28,989 grant is from the Biffa Award, a multi-million pound fund that builds communities via funding to public and environmental projects across the UK as part of the Landfill Communities Fund.

Due to the age of the clubhouse accessibility is difficult for activities for local and regional communities, including mothers and tots groups, health and well-being groups, yoga, art classes, quizzes, wine tasting, lectures and formal occasions such as weddings.

Tony White, Chairman of Liverpool Cricket Club, says: “As a community club, Liverpool Cricket Club already reaches out to the local community and environment through sporting and social occasions.

“The installation of a lift now widens out acceptance of our local community who face mobility issues so they can also enjoy these sporting occasion that others have enjoyed since 1881.

“The Biffa Award grant enables this club to install a lift to help give others that chance they deserve.”

LCC, founded in 1807, is the oldest amateur sports club in Merseyside and has hosted first-class cricket at the Aigburth ground since 1881 with Lancashire winning four of their six matches at the ground in their 2011 County Championship win.

The ground, which is used for social activities and events hire, hosts the Liverpool International Tennis Tournament with previous athletes including Marion Bartolli, Mansour Bahrami and Greg Rusedski.

Gillian French, Biffa Award programme manager, says: “Liverpool Cricket Club has a fantastic history with engaging people from the local area.

“We’re pleased to support this project to help more people access the facilities on site. This project is an excellent example of how the Landfill Communities Fund can help improve local spaces for the community.”

Mark Bishop, Club member, says: “I have been a member of Liverpool Cricket Club for over 50 years. I now have increasing mobility problems and the provision of a lift will enable me to continue to enjoy the Club’s facilities and events, a previously fast-fading possibility! Thanks, Biffa Award.”
