Liverpool Sefton Hockey Club Welcomes New Coach
Liverpool Sefton Hockey Club is delighted to officially announce Peter Nicholson (ex-GB and England Manager) as the Senior Club Coach for the forthcoming 2015-16 season. He will have a range of responsibilities. His main role is to coach the Women’s Senior Squads and manage 1st team matches. In addition he will help with Youth Development at our new Satellite School partners Liverpool College and Archbishop Blanch. He will also advise the men’s Senior Teams and all the club coaches and will run a monthly series of classroom based seminars which will be open to all Liverpool Sefton members and other Merseyside Clubs. He also intends to start a series of Peter Nicholson Hockey Holiday Schools.
Liverpool Sefton with its five women’s and four men’s teams is the most successful hockey club in the city of Liverpool. The Women’s 1st team plays in the Investec Women’s Hockey League Conference North, narrowly avoiding relegation last season. The Men’s 1sts and Women’s 2nds play in the North League Division 2 North West.
Peter Nicholson captained England from 1985-87 as well as attaining 54 caps as part of the England Indoor team. He has coached and managed both men’s and women’s hockey teams (Seniors and U21s) at international level, attending the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur and Manchester as well as several World Cup and European Championships in a coaching capacity. He was then asked to become Team Manager of England and Great Britain men which most notably included the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, the Beijing Olympics and the 2009 European Championships in Holland where England became European Champions. Between 2007 and 2013 he was England Hockey Board Performance Manager responsible for the programme management of all the National Age Squads (U16, U18 U21) including the recruitment of coaches and managers, the design and evaluation of the programmes and the development of staff. He was also responsible for the National Performance Centre (NPC) programme for identified potentially elite athletes in the age range 18-23, based at partner universities, delivering technical skills and all areas of sports science and lifestyle.
Club Chair Bill Chambers stated ‘the club is excited that Peter applied to be our coach. Not only will it benefit the Women’s 1st squad but it will impact on all senior and youth, male and female teams and will hopefully raise aspiration, enhance performance and attract a large number of ambitious hockey players to the club.’
Women’s 1st Squad Captain Vicky Bell stated ‘this is a dream come true. We are thrilled to have one of the top hockey personalities in England coaching us at Liverpool Sefton Hockey Club. Before accepting our offer he attended a mid-summer squad training session, attended by 25 players and impressed us all with his enthusiasm, professionalism, expertise, modesty and charm. We can’t wait to start pre-season and are confident of achieving great success.’
Peter Nicholson will officially start his new position at the club from the 1st August.
