Men’s 1s Continue Winning Run

The men’s 1s continued their winning run in difficult conditions at Northern.

Freezing cold and storm force winds met the players but not quite as bad as the infamous mixed game a few years back.

Sefton welcomed back Aaron Robinson from injury whilst Gerard Killough returned very well fed from Christmas in Northern Ireland.

The first half was shockingly bad and it seemed that both teams had not played in a year. Particular low lights included Peter Kenyon hitting an oppo player in the face with a sand wedge, PK’s fresh air when free in their circle, Peter Maybury hitting the post from a yard with the goal gaping and Jake Herman truly Hermaning a reverse shot over the fence when he had 5 minutes to compose himself.

Sefton turned round into a stiff breeze second half and it must have woken us up as we were 2-0 up within 5 minutes. A well worked move found Jake unmarked at the back post to slap home. A minute later a less cultured build up allowed Pod to bundle a shot home from 5 yards. Sefton continued to press and Gerry was rewarded for his mazey runs with a tap in himself.

As usual with games against Northern, they battled back and scored from a short corner switch and a shot after Peter Formela appeared to have been stick tackled twice at the edge of our D.

Panic stations for Sefton and the final 10 minutes were a mix of chances at both ends. Special mention for Gerry who beat 5 Northern players and then almost hit the Umpire with a hooked reverse shot.

Man of the Match was big James Ferguson and DOD was a close run thing between PK, Jake, Gerry and Stig.  So, despite having FOUR candidates for DOD, Sefton notched up a 3-2 victory!

Thanks to Grace Moffitt for having to watch and for keeping an eye on Maybury Junior.
