Liverpool Sefton Hockey Club - a brief history

Liverpool Sefton Hockey Club is a combination of Liverpool Ladies and Liverpool Sefton Hockey Clubs. Liverpool Ladies came to Aigburth in 1894 and the club was a founder member of the All England Women’s Hockey Association in 1896. Liverpool was the only club north of Bedford. Since those origins the Liverpool Ladies home was at Deysbrook Lane, Crawford’s Sports Club, The Old Hall in Sandfield Park, Wavertree Cricket Club, Picton Road Sports Centre and Liverpool University and are now playing at the astro at Liverpool College. In 1997 they amalgamated with Liverpool Sefton to become Liverpool Sefton Hockey Club.

Over the years many players have held international honours including Pat Park, Rita Bentley, June Birrall. Lorna Clark and Maureen Short whilst Clare Owens captained Wales. In 1979 England played Wales at Aigburth and won 2-0.

The women’s section runs 3 teams with the first team being a member of the North Premier Division.

The men’s section has a history similar to that of the women. They began life in 1885 as Blantyre Recreation Club playing behind the Brook House Hotel in Smithdown Road. In 1889 they became known as Sefton Hockey Club and were founder members of the Lancashire County Hockey Association. Liverpool Sefton is the oldest remaining male hockey club in the north of England. The club moved to Sefton Park and then Wavertree Recreation’s Club on Sandown Lane. In 1910 they moved to Huyton Cricket Club and then for a period were itinerant, moving to Broadgreen, then back to Huyton, then to Stoneycroft, back to Huyton, then to Aigburth for the first time, then Huyton. It finally moved to Aigburth in 1963 and its first game was home to Sale on 5th October. When hockey was played on grass the Aigburth pitches (five at one time) were the best in the land and hosted the traditional Lancashire-Cheshire Boxing Day matches.

The golden period of men’s hockey was the 1970-1990s when the Club won the Lancashire Club Championship in 1975-6, 1983-4, and 1987-8 and won the Northern Counties Knock-out Cup in 1976. The Club won the North West League in 1974-5, 1977-8 and 1985-6. At this time we had five county players including the legendary Dave Blackmore, David Badley who played for England on 5 occasions and Lancashire 127 times, John Badly who played for Lancashire 49 times and Steve Eyre who played for Lancashire 83 times and the England Indoor Hockey team. David Balckmore played for Lancashire a record number of 162 times, for England 32 times and 17 times for Great Britain. More recently he played for the North of England and England over 60s teams.

In 1987 the club narrowly missed becoming a founder member of the National League by failing to win one of their last two qualifying games. The 1st team, after a few years of decline, has steadily improved winning promotion in 2004-5 and 2005-6 and in 2006 winning the National Plate Competition and now playing in the North League Division 2 West.

The 2nd XI plays in the North West League Division 3, the 3rd team in Division 6 North and the 4th team in Division 10 North.
