Women’s 3s Still Top of Lancashire Division 1!
Today’s game was at home against Liverpool University 2s and as usual we didn’t know what to expect!
It was a little chilly and Jas had to begin her warm up by brushing ice away from her goal area!!
The team today was a strong one, welcoming back Remi who is hoping to get back to full fitness and move forward with her hockey.
Straight from the off we were put under pressure with myself clearing three times in front of goal in the space of 3 minutess or so! The Uni were relentless with their attack; even though they started with 10, it didn’t feel like it!!!! They pressed and pressed but our defence and midfield kept them out managing at the same time to try and feed the forwards (attack being the best form of defence). We kept our composure and continued to pass the ball and press on them which finally came good with a ball played to Colette who managed to score a great captain’s goal to ease the pressure!
The goal seemed to give us the extra fight to step up a gear with the midfield swapping regularly, Rachel, Katie, Jess, Colette, Remi, Sarah and Siobhan getting to the ball first, and fighting to get it back when losing it! Jas pulled of some great saves with Orla, Sophie and Olivia helping to control our defence as we worked as a unit!
Up front Jenny, Libby and Holly ran endlessly and also got back to help defend and unsettling the Uni side – a second goal was beckoning! After some great team passing it ended with a spinning/falling/sliding shot from Katie, our resident knee scraper: 2-0 waheyy!
We seemed to have a run of strange penalty corners awarded against us during the first half which we managed to keep control of through the defenders blocking and Jas being amazing but sadly after what felt like the 159th one they finally managed to sneak one in!!!! 2-1
The second half (yes this all happened in the 1st half!) was more of the same with attacks against us and for us with endless running from the whole team! We seemed to start to get the upper hand and began to bombard their goal with shots from all the forwards and also the midfielders having a go but nothing seemed to be working and at one point Libby had shot upon shot upon shot but no goal!
The last five minutes was a bit nervy as the Uni, who seemed to be getting more decisions than us, had one last attack but the determination of our defence meant we were never going to give our lead up! Final score 2-1!!’
Thank you for voting me Woman of the Match but I think everyone played great today as we never gave up and worked hard as a team! Also thanks to James for being our umpire and to our supporters for their endless shouts of encouragement.
Roll on next week!!!
