Women’s 3s Continue Winning Streak
Fired-up by our previous victories, Sefton 3s exerted pressure on West Derby 1s from the whistle. We hit, lifted and reversed the ball on goal but West Derby’s defensive tactics (3 pink shirts for every blue shirt) and their bulletproof goalie made it impossible for us to score. West Derby made a good few breaks throughout the first half but our defence held their own with strong tackles and interceptions, which brought composure to the team. Towards the end of the half we managed to break down West Derby’s structure and beautiful passing from midfield caught the end of Jess May’s stick who fired the ball onto the backboard. (1-0)
After our usual half time pep talk, a more confident Sefton stepped out onto the field. We managed to get a few more deserved short corners and shots on goal. A poor pass/shot from myself from outside the D was effortlessly deflected into the goal by Libby Martin who confessed after the match that she had her eyes closed at the time. (2-0)
As the game progressed we remained goal hungry and pushed up as a unit into their half. A beautiful ball was passed to me which I was able to convert into a goal (without falling over for a change!) (3-0) Going into the last 10 minutes West Derby stepped up their game and made several runs up the line, one of which resulted in a dangerous lift which Orla Cronin fell victim to. Being the trooper she is Orla continued to play courageously for the remainder of the match.
Final score 3-0!
Well played to everyone; we worked well as a team and have learnt a valuable lesson – to play to the whistle.
A special thanks to all supporters who came to watch.
Bring on next Saturday!
