Women’s 3s Drop Points against Keeperless Formby 2s!

This is not a match report I particularly wanted to write as all that springs to mind is:  ‘Dropped Points!!!!!’

The day began as usual with a team talk in the changies, which I missed due to being late, followed by cheering on our 4s who were still playing and ended with a great victory for them. Then our warm up, which was needed as it was freeeeeezing, and away we went!

The game started as usual with good movement and passing throughout the team until it dawned on us that our opponents didn’t field a GK!! Not even an outfield kicker!! You’d have thought that this would have made it easier for us but no – quite the opposite.  It just seemed to make us forget our game plan and just try and get the ball pumped forward to our strike force to slot away the goals.  Formby, however, had a different plan and that was to block out the midfield and attack as an 11 player unit making it hard for our midfield to get past them! Jaz pulled of a few fab saves and the defence held them off without many concerns and tried to push forward to find a goal!  Many decisions went against us throughout the first half adding to our frustration and we knew it was going to be ‘one of those games’. We did, however, manage to break them down and get in their area on numerous occasions in the first half but shots were stopped or off target.  We eventually managed to get two penalty corners within 10 minutes of each other which I managed to convert.  Yes I know there was no GK but there were 5 defenders who I actually didn’t want to purposely injure so needed to keep low and accurate:  2-0!

Second half was meant to be the undoing of Formby but I think we left our hockey brains on the sideline as we just didn’t seem to click at all.  Formby pressed and pressed and were given numerous PC’s but luckily they were off target and then came our turn with a forward pass through to Holly who managed to control and convert:   3-0!

Smiles soon turned to frowns as Formby continued to press and keep us boxed into our own half and we suddenly found ourselves at 3-2, one from a penalty corner and the other from what seemed a tangled mess in the area!!!

We did have a few chances after this but sadly couldn’t seem to put them away.

2 minutes to go and a hit in by us was intercepted and a ball on foot in the area gave them another PC – yes the whistle blew and we tried to defend it but sadly failed with the end result 3-3

We all felt bad but know it was our own fault as all season we have played as a unit with great passing and movement, but sadly we couldn’t seem to do this today.   But it does happen in sport and hopefully next week normal play will resume!! Roll on Mossley 2s!

Thanks again for my vote and thank you to Carl Woods for umpiring our game and also thanks to our travelling supporters and the 4s who stayed to cheer us on; just sorry we let you and ourselves down!
