Women’s 3s through to KO stage of Lancashire Cup
The Ladies 3s faced Mossley 1s in the last pool game of the Lancashire Cup. We had a better goal difference than Mossley so they had to beat us to go through to the knockout stages.
Gale force winds prompted a few early morning ‘is the game still on’ texts from the girls. The umpires, however, deemed it fit to play.
Despite these conditions the ladies 3s looked sharp from the outset and were unlucky to concede – it was a great strike that nearly took the backboard off. When Jenny Morris got put through one on one with the goalkeeper there was only going to be one winner. After half time we found ourselves 2-1 down. We quickly equalized, however, when Katie Murphy converted a rebound from Jess May’s shot. With about 15 minutes to go we took the lead with a beautifully converted short corner from Kara but with only 5 minutes to go Mossley managed to equalise and the game finished 3-3. A great result against a strong Mossley team which allows us to go through to the knock out stages of the cup.
On show was some great passing in midfield controlled by Siobhan and Rachel to get the ball through to the forwards who worked hard in tough conditions to create space.
Great performances at the back from Kara, Orla, Sophie and Olivia contained a strong Mossley attack for much of the game. Special mention must go to Jas Price, however, who completed some outstanding saves, once even coming out to tackle a Mossley forward outside the D with her stick. The team recognised this and voted Jas woman of the match with 6 votes.
We can take a lot from this game heading into the second half of the season and look forward to hosting Liverpool University next Saturday.
