What EXACTLY is Lacrosse? 🥍

In an era where sports are evolving faster than ever, it doesn’t take long before everyone’s talking and wondering what it’s all about. Lacrosse is no exception. You might have heard it’s coming to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics in an exciting 6-a-side format, but what exactly is Lacrosse?

Why You’ll Love Lacrosse

  • Lacrosse is a fast, free-flowing sport that combines elements of hockey, football, and basketball. It is known as the fastest game on two feet!
  • It is played by both men and women in different ways: outdoor field lacrosse, indoor box lacrosse, and the fast-paced elite-level 6-a-side format.
  • Mixed lacrosse can also be played and is considered the most social and inclusive version of the game.
  • England’s men are currently ranked 6th globally, and the women are 3rd. Both teams are reigning European Champions.

How do you Play?

Players use a stick with a netted head, called a crosse, to catch, carry, and throw a small rubber ball. The goal is simple: get the ball into the other team’s net!

The game kicks off with a draw where two players compete to move the ball to their team members. From there, teams pass, run, and dodge their way towards the goal. Midfielders help out both ends, defenders try to stop attacks, attackers focus on scoring, and the goalie protects the net.

A Little History

Lacrosse originated in North America, where Indigenous people played a game called Baggataway as far back as 1100 AD. This version could be played by up to 1000 men over several days and was considered to be ceremonial warfare! Today, lacrosse has evolved into a fast, fun, and energetic modern sport.

Light Rules (The Fun Version!)

  • Dropped balls become ground balls, which both teams race to recover, keeping the pace quick and exciting.
  • There are no restrictions on where players can move to, except for the goalie, who can’t cross the far restrainer.
  • No heavy body contact is allowed, it’s all about skill, speed, and clever stick work.
  • Defenders keep a safe distance when marking attackers, but there’s plenty of room to show off.

With simple rules and endless action, lacrosse is a blast whether you’re playing competitively or just for fun! Lacrosse is now played in community clubs, schools and universities throughout England, with Liverpool being one of the oldest Clubs around. The Cricket Club has been Liverpool Lacrosse’s home for over 15 years now, with a focus on both competition and enjoyment. So join in the fun at LCC →

The Summer of Sport Success Story — 2025 Edition—

What a season it’s been! Record-breaking cricket triumphs, remarkable resilience on the tennis courts and a proud showing on the greens, Liverpool Cricket & Sports Club has enjoyed a truly unforgettable summer of sport. Let us not forget the International Tennis Tournament & hosting the Lancashire One-Day test matches, making the summer of 2025 a year that will be remembered for years to come.

CRICKET

A Record BREAKING season! 🏆

  • 1st XI – Champions of the first division and will now be playing in the premier league for the first time in 26 years.
  • 2nd XI – Won the T20 for the first time in the club’s history. It should be noted that both the 1st and 2nd XI are captained by ‘homegrown’ players.
  • 3rd and 4th XI’s recorded their highest finishes for a decade.
  • We won our second ever piece of silverware in Sunday cricket as our 3s PS won their league and 3s AD finished in second place.

In addition to our league success our cricket section now boasts;

  • The highest number of women players since 2022.
  • Over 250 junior members, with us fielding 10 hardball sides including 2 girl’s teams.
  • Under 18’s South League winners
  • Under 15’s competition winners and Development South winners.

TENNIS

Despite 2 years without home courts, our tennis section THRIVED!

  • Two teams promoted, one as undefeated champions.
  • Senior league player of the year: Martin Green.
  • Under 16 League Player of the year; Nik Paul.
  • Lancashire League Under 16 Doubles Champions 🥇

This all achieved despite us having no ‘home courts’ to play on for nearly two years and losing a large number of members to other clubs.

We are now actively recruiting new women members in order that we can enter into the 2026 Liverpool Tennis Ladies League for the first time in 5 years.

BOWLS

Pensioners’ League Team

Came third in a highly competitive league and reached the final of the Savage Trophy knockout competition, where they narrowly lost on a neutral green.

The Wednesday A team

Back in the top division of the Garston League in 2025 following our league victory in the second division in 2024 where we obtained a very creditable 4th place finish.

Highlight matches included-

Our first win at Mossley Hill in a long time against their B team.

A solid home victory against a strong Halewood A team.

An excellent home win in our final game of the season versus Mossley Hill A team who were challenging for the league.

League Cup Competition: The Kerr Shield

The team really excelled however when we reached the final, we played Grant who were top of the league table. In an incredibly tight match, we were pipped to the post, only losing by 7 points.

Despite the disappointment of coming so close, we can look back on a fantastic cup run with pride. It was especially pleasing to have a substantial number of non-A team members in attendance, cheering the team on. Many thanks to those who came to show their support.

The Wednesday B team

A very successful year achieving a win against Aigburth St Michaels A team, who are a top team in the highest league, in a Cup competition.

Frank & John Triumph in the 2025 Graham Moore Memorial Cup 🟢🏆

The 2025 Graham Moore Memorial Cup took place on Sunday 28th September in glorious sunshine. With 32 players competing in this Special Pairs Competition, it was a brilliant day of bowling, laughter and community spirit.

It is an annual competition open to everyone! An established bowler partners with a newcomer or complete beginner. It is an opportunity for newcomers to learn bowls along with enjoying a great social gathering.

It was a joy to see so many new faces either playing or offering support for this fabulous celebration in memory of Graham. He was a much loved character who was a mainstay of the bowls section for many years. Sue Moore would like to thank everyone for their participation, organisation and generally being fun people!

The final of the 2025 Graham Moore Memorial Cup was a closely fought contest, Ray and Chelsea vs Frank and John. Commiserations to Ray and Chelsea and Congratulations to Frank and John – Great Final, Great Day!

We have lots of social bowls at the club, so if you fancy a go, get in touch with Bowls Secretary Dave Scanlon at davescanlon@msn.com.

If you were encouraged to “give bowls a go” following the day’s fantastic turn-out, you will be warmly welcomed. Also, there is bowls training headed up by Olwen, which will re-commence at the start of the bowls season, next Spring. Find out more HERE

Is that Promotion Calling? 📞🏏

Our Cricket Men’s 1st Team faced their penultimate game of the season on Saturday 13th September, where they were on the edge of promotion up to the premier league after a strong season. All they needed was a win or draw against Spring View on Saturday to guarantee their move up to the top.

Now, if you know cricket you’ll know that when a game gets cancelled, the score goes down as a draw, and due to some bad weather on the day, that exactly what happened! So after waiting over 25 years, the Cricket Men’s 1st Team have been promoted back up to the Premier League!!!

Next season, they’ll face Ormskirk CC where 2025 marks the first time in the club’s history that the 1st XI have won the Premier League three times in succession. Their players who have gone to first class cricket include the likes of Tom Hartley, Simon Kerrigan & John Simpson. They’ll also face Northern CC who’s finished inside the Top 5 of the Premier League every year for the last 10 years.

They’re not the only ones making history though as LCC are back in the premier league for the first time since 1999, so this team has a point to prove next season! Up the cherries! 🍒🍒

Growing Our Tennis Game: On court & Off 🎾

At our end-of-season tennis awards night, we celebrated two teams earning league promotions – with one crowned champions! 🏆 Players voted for Player of the Year, while Club Person of the Year went to someone who made the biggest impact both on and off the court. Taking place in our ballroom during the club’s open mic night, it was a perfect finish to a perfect season, with members still in the bar till late & then nipping over to Lark Lane for afters.

Open mic nights are held on the last Friday of every month. Whether you want to sing, play an instrument, read a poem, or just enjoy a drink and a chat, everyone’s welcome. No need to book – just turn up, grab a seat, and join in however you like.

Social Night🍹

No rest for the wicked, however, as preparations for next season swiftly continued. We hosted our social tennis & padel night on Monday, furthering our aim to improve the mental health & wellbeing of our players & members, by bringing them together for a fun night of sport. It was a great mix of coached sessions & social play, with players of all levels taking part. It was also an opportunity to welcome back our coaches from We Do Tennis, who are, as the name suggests, our LTA-accredited tennis coaches.

A great turnout of people came to try tennis and/or padel for the first time or jump back in where they left off, so much so, they were filled to the brim! We even had to start a waitlist for the junior sessions. The evening carried on with plenty of laughs, drinks, and relaxing in the members’ lounge 🎾🍹. If you loved the vibe, why not make it official? Memberships are open, join the club and be part of the fun all year round!- Join LCC
