Review of the 2020 Summer Season
The Liverpool Ladies team began training in late July as soon as the ECB guidance allowed. Sessions, initially, were all softball and played on the top ground. All the sessions ended in a match.
The ladies were all determined to improve their skills and organised a weekly session in the match.
As restrictions were eased, some friendly matches were arranged. The team were grateful for the opportunity to put their developing skills into use and enjoyed close matches with Old Xavs, Northern and Sefton Park.
In late August and early September, the ladies took part in the LDCC softball competition played over 2 days in both Bootle and Hightown. With a team showing massive determination and enthusiasm and lots of skill, the team triumphed I 6 of the 8 games played to book a place in the semi-final. Sadly, this wasn’t played due to increased Covid restrictions, but should be re-arranged in 2021.
In the last softball match of the season, meant to be a practice for the semi-final, the ladies triumphed over a team, of U11’s and U13’s boys. In some cases, Mums took wickets against their sons! I’m sure the boys will be looking for revenge.
Another new challenge for the Ladies team in 2020 was a step up to hardball. With the usual enthusiasm, the Ladies practiced, both in the nets and on the field before taking part in the league Super 8’s Challenge. They played well against two strong teams and demonstrated that they were more than ready to play hardball in 2021. They even managed to be the last team to play, with a fantastic match against Sefton Park on the bottom pitch.
One slight regret is that Liverpool ladies weren’t able to see the Lancashire Ladies team play their matches on the top ground due to the covid restrictions. Hopefully this won’t be the case in the future.
Of the really positive highlights of a short but eventful season was the Women’s and girls’ taster day, held on one Sunday morning following a training session. The number of new women and girls players who were happy to give cricket a go, was really encouraging.
On the strength of this, the Club are arranging 3 separate sessions over the winter months and into the new season; a session aimed at girls, one targeted at ladies largely new to cricket and the session with the ladies’ team which will involve both softball and hardball cricket. These sessions will be led by a combination of male and female coaches.
The future for women as and girls cricket is really positive and this is part of the Cricket section which we hope will grow. We were pleased that Lancashire Cricket Foundations featured the team
2021 should see us increasing both the number of players and the number of games. Exciting times.
